New student FAQ
Questions are welcome.
You do not need experience, a certain fitness level, or the courage to spar on day one. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Do I have to schedule a visit?
No. Guests are always welcome to stop in and watch a class. If you would feel more comfortable calling ahead, we’ll have an instructor ready to greet you. To participate in your free class, sending your details in advance helps us match you with the best session.
What is a typical class like?
Most classes have three phases: warmups, technique and partner drilling, then live sparring. Coaches explain each movement and help you work at the appropriate pace.
What should I wear to my first class?
Wear comfortable workout clothes—gym shorts and a fitted T-shirt or compression shirt are ideal. Shoes are not worn on the mats so we can keep the training surface clean.
What should I expect on my first night?
You’ll join the group warmup, then an instructor will guide you through fundamental movements and techniques with a partner. Live sparring follows instruction, but new students do not need to participate until they feel comfortable.
Do I have to spar?
No. Students are not pressured to do something they are not ready for. Sparring eventually helps develop movement and timing, but it is technical practice—not an attempt to hurt or knock out a teammate.
Will I train alongside professional fighters?
Possibly. Several amateur and professional fighters regularly attend classes and sometimes help newer students learn. Coaches keep partners and intensity appropriate for each student.
Do you offer both Gi and No-Gi BJJ?
Yes. Sonic offers both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so students develop a well-rounded skill set. We recommend keeping your Gi with you for class and open mat.
How much do classes cost?
Plans vary by training frequency, program, and whether you are joining individually or as a family. We’ll provide the current price sheet and explain every option before you commit. Your first class is free.
Do I have to compete?
No. Most members train for fitness, self-defense, confidence, and enjoyment without competing. Students who do want to compete can prepare for local through international BJJ and MMA events with the team.
Do I need to get in shape before I start?
Absolutely not. Many students begin specifically to improve their fitness. We’ll ease you into training and help your conditioning develop over time.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?
As with any sport, accidents are possible. Sonic emphasizes control, clean technique, appropriate partners, and a training pace that keeps practice realistic, safe, and enjoyable.
Am I too old to begin?
No. Students begin martial arts at many different ages and fitness levels. If you have a health concern or prior injury, speak with your healthcare professional and let the coach know before class so training can be adjusted appropriately.
What makes Sonic different?
A family-like atmosphere, a diverse membership, and a genuine commitment to helping each student grow on and off the mat. You can train seriously without feeling like you have to arrive as a fighter.
